Spain: Al Qaeda Islamist Has Sentence Slashed By 15 Years

YarkasWe reported on September 26 2005 that Syrian-born Islamist, Imad Eddin Barakat Yarkas (pictured) was jailed for 27 years for conspiring with others to cause the attacks on the US on 9/11, 2001.

Yarkas, who also used the alias Abu Dahdah, was given 12 years for heading a terrorist group, with 15 years added for "conspiracy to commit murder" at Spain's High Court in Madrid.

Now, however, EFE via Expatica states that federal prosecutors have recommended that the 15 year sentence for "conspiracy to commit murder", applied for his alleged involvement with 9/11, should be waived.

The prosecutors acknowledged, following an appeal by Yarkas, that it was not proven beyond doubt that he had taken part in organising the 9/11 attacks against New York and Washington targets.

17 other defendants stood trial with Yarkas on terror charges. Now Yarkas will only be serving the 12 year sentence for heading a terrorist organisation.
