UK Islam: Faces Of Fanaticism Part One
Last week, the Egyptian born Muslim cleric Abu Hamza was jailed for seven years on February 7 for soliciting to murder. It was then revealed by Scotland Yard that Finsbury Park Mosque in North London, where Hamza had preached, had a cache of starting pistols, a stun gun, forged passports and forged driving licenses, which were concealed behind a ceiling tile. These items had been discovered during a raid by police in 2003, but details had been suppressed until after the trial.
The cleric's harsh-featured lawyer, Mudrassa Anri, claimed after the trial that Hamza had been given clearance to preach, and in meetings had even been given codenames by MI5, one of Britain's two intelligence agencies.
Yesterday, the Times stated that an Algerian spy, employed by MI5 to report on activities at Finsbury Park mosque, has confirmed the suggestion that MI5 did not view Hamza as a serious threat.
Three newspapers claimed after the trial that three of the individuals who set off bombs on London Transport on the 7th July last year had on occasion attended Hamza's lectures at the Finsbury Park mosque.
Reda Hassiane, the MI5 "plant" at the mosque between July 1999 and November 2000, claimed that he was told by the intelligence agency that it was "not interested" in prosecuting Hamza for soliciting murder and inciting racial hatred, the crimes for which he was convicted last week.
"I told them Abu Hamza was brainwashing people and sending them to terrorist training camps in Afghanistan, that he was preaching jihad and murder and that he was involved in the provision of false passports. I told them he was a chief terrorist," he claimed. "They told me not to bother, that they weren't interested."
Hassiane is currently attempting to see if he has legal grounds to sue MI5 for physical and mental damage.
Yesterday, New Zealand's National Ledger carried a report by Jim Kouri, a senior police officer, detailing the ways in which Hamza, widely depicted as Captain Hook, a figure of fun, actually had a private army to carry out his wishes. These included taking over other mosques in Britain.
Several clerics told stories of being threatened by gangs claiming to be members of Abu Hamza's Supporters of Sharia group. Some of the clerics were beaten inside their own mosques, and worshippers were bullied into finding new places to pray -- and the police refused to intervene, they claim. The report claims that even some of Hamza's own followers grew tired of his autocratic style, which some compared to a Mafia godfather when dealing with those who disagreed with him.One police official, under condition of anonymity, said that law enforcement executives in Britain were overly cautious about their interaction with Muslim leaders and their mosques.
Two rival imams have said that they had to receive hospital treatment after being attacked by Hamza's henchmen. They claim that when they reported the incidents to Scotland Yard, their complaints were virtually ignored.
A former estates manager at the Finsbury Park Mosque, 66-year old Fazli Ali, has said to London police: "Hamza and his cronies threatened me several times. I was head of security but they even threatened to kill me. Ours was a peaceful place but he wanted to turn it into a political arena."
The report claims that more than 100 Muslims were sent by Hamza to locations in the Middle East, where they took part in al-Qaeda training camps. The UK police do not know what happened to these individuals.
The case of Abu Hamza highlights how one monster, who incited people to kill Jews and unbelievers, could be condoned by the UK authorities for a long time, causing in the process untold damage to the so-called "War on Terror" which the UK professes to support.
The report also suggests that similar things are currently happening in the US, where a climate of political correctness is preventing law enforcement officers from dealing with internal affairs of mosques. US Senators state that the US Bureau of Prisons employs the services of the Graduate School of Islamic and Social Sciences (GISS). This is currently being investigated for possibly funding terrorists. The US Bureau of Prisons also is involved with the Islamic Society of North America which has board members who are connected to terror groups.
A softly-softly approach to imams and mosques who support terror has proved, through the example of Abu Hamza, to achieve nothing, either in terms of ensuring good multicultural relations with Muslims, or in combatting the spread of the convoluted webs of terror.
It appears that the only way to deal with those who incite murder and support terror is to adopt a "zero-tolerance" approach, and to ignore the apologists of Muslim terror, such as CAIR and in Britain organisations such as the Muslim Council for Britain.
Britain's approach to terror in mosques is alienating the public, and America should be aware of this, and not fall into the same trap. There should be no "negotiating"with, and no tolerance of, the apostles of terror.
