Turkey: Bones Of Islamists' Victims Uncovered
We wrote earlier of the Turkish Hezbollah, an Islamist group which is not related to the Iranian-funded Shia group Hezbollah in Lebanon. Turkish Hezbollah is comprised mainly of Kurds, and is a Sunni institution.
Founded in southeastern Turkey at the beginning of the 1990s, Turkish Hezbollah which opposes the "secular" establishment of Turkey, lost the support of its political allies by the end of the decade. Following the government's shooting of its then leader, Huseyin Velioglu on January 17, 2000, a massive crackdown was enacted, with 900 arrests.
The crackdown brought horrific revelations, as videotapes were found showing members of the group torturing and killing kidnap victims. Dozens of bodies were found.
Today's Turkish News reveals that two skeletons have been uncovered in the garden of a home in the town of Cizre, southeastern Turkey. The skeletons are believed to belong to victims of Turkish Hezbollah.
The garden belonged to a convicted Hezbollah member. In 2000, a search of the house had revealed a large cache of weapons. The current search was initiated after a tip-off.
The discovery of these bones now brings the total number of known victims of Turkish Hezbollah to more than 70.
