India: Now Buddhists Are Threatened By Angry Muslims

The ancestral home of Siddartha Gautama, the founder of Buddhism, is in India, but now very few Buddhists remain in the subcontinent. A small community exists in Kargil in the northern state of Jammu & Kashmir.

Today's Rediff.com reports that a curfew has been imposed in the towns of Kargil and Leh, which adjoin the border with Pakistan-controlled Kashmir. The reason for the curfew is that tensions between local Buddhist and Muslim communities threaten to erupt into violence.

An alleged (but so far unsubstantiated) desecration of a copy of the Koran and a mosque have been claimed, in the town of Leh. Instead of relying on the authorities to sort out the truth of such allegations, Shia Muslims have held protests, which have included a procession, culminating in ransacking the office of the deputy superintendent of the local police.

Basharat Ahmad Dhar, the divisional commissioner of Kashmir has said: "We have called out the army in the twin towns of Kargil and Leh to assist the local police in strict enforcement of the curfew restrictions to bring the situation under control. Right now the situation is tense, but peaceful."

Kargil district magistrate Asfandyar Khan said that the additional deputy commissioner of Kargil was among a number of people injured, and was currently hospitalised. "Several of agitators and cops were injured when the police intervened to quell the ransacking mob," he said.

It seems that for many Muslims, a mere allegation is enough to cause riots, as we are witnessing in the cartoon protests currently being stage-managed by political Islamists around the globe.

In Pakistan in November, the burning of several churches followed a false allegation that a Christian, Yousaf Maseh, had burned copies of the Koran.

Many of the Buddhist kingdoms of Southeast Asia are taken over by Muslims - the pacifist nature of the Buddhists made it easy for the conquerers.
