Muslim Cartoons: In Russia, A Danish Lawyer Is Shot

In a Moscow cafe earlier today (Monday), a Danish lawyer was shot by a man from the Muslim Caucasus region, states the Scotsman. These are all the details available so far, but I will update as the picture becomes clearer.

The southern region of the Caucasus has been the scene of violent sectarian conflict, most violently in Chechnya, spearheaded by a majority Muslim population, many of whom wish to secede entirely from Russia. On October 13 last year in Nalchik, Kabardino Balkaria, at 150 Islamist militants launched gun attacks against public buildings. At least 100 people died, mostly the insurgents.

The prime minister of Chechnya has announced that all Danish humanitarian organisations will be expelled.

In Iraq, Danish troops were shot at in Qurnah, southern Iraq, as they helped child victims of a car accident.

In Iran, it was announced that all economic ties with Denmark will be severed. In Tehran, a mob of a couple of hundred people threw rocks and Molotov cocktails the Austrian embassy. Austria currently holds the presidency of the EU. Despite the earlier condemnations of the Danish cartoons by the EU commissioner for human rights, Franco Frattini, which he made on December 26, before the recent eruptions of violence, the EU is being condemned by protesters.

In Gaza, where previously the terror groups Islamic Jihad and Hamas had fired gunshots in the air beside the European Commission headquarters, today Palestinian demonstrators threw stones and pulled the EU flag from its mounting.

Some politicians in Lebanon have blamed Syria for sending activists to burn down the Danish consulate in Beirut yesterday. An official apology was today sent to Denmark for the arson attack.

But the Scotsman reports that one man in Gaza, Ahmed Abu Dayya, is very happy about the situation. He ordered 100 Danish and Norwegian flags just as the situation began to escalate. Now he is doing a roaring trade, dispensing them to be burned, trampled and mangled.
