Cartoons: Muslim Mayhem - Five People Dead So Far
The situation on the protests against depictions of Prophet Mohammed have led to violence. At the weekend, in Syria the Danish and Norwegian embassies were set on firein Damascus, and on Sunday in Lebanon the Danish Embassy in Beirut was set alight by a mob who pushed through police security. The Lebanese interior minister resigned almost immediately after the torching of the embassy.
In Trabjon, northeast Turkey, an Italian Catholic priest, Andrea Santore, was shot dead by a Muslim youth, states the BBC, but whether his death was connected to the cartoon affair is unknown.
But today, the BBC reports that a man died in the Beirut embassy protest. One protester had jumped from a third floor to escape the flames and was killed.
In Puntland, Somalia, a 14 year old boy was shot dead by police after a mob attacked officers earlier today. In Laghman province, Afghanistan, a police station was attacked by an out-of-control group of protesters, resulting in police firing back, and killing three protesters.
In Somalia, a crowd of 200 or so protesters stormed the Danish embassy and broke windows.
In Indonesia, at Surabaya, the second largest city, the US consulate was attacked, despite the US press' reluctance to print the cartoons.
In Delhi, India, hundreds of students went on the rampage, prompting the authorities to fire tear gas and water cannons to disperse them. In Indian-controlled Kashmir, a general strike was called over the cartoons.
In Thailand, the Danish flag was trampled outside the Danish embassy in Bangkok.
This is the not the fault of the Danish government, nor its people, nor even Jyllands-Posten, the newspaper which originally printed the pictures back in September 2005, only once. The matter was deliberately exacerbated by a 60 year old Danish Muslim cleric, of Palestinian origin. As we described earlier, Ahmed Abdel Rahman Abu Laban went on tours of the Middle East displaying in addition to the 12 printed cartoons, three extra images, which were never printed in any Danish newspaper. These three fabrications depicted Mohammed as a paedophile, as a pig, and showing a Muslim being raped by a dog.
For these Muslim mobs around the world, a little detail like the truth appears irrelevant.
