Norway: Boycott Of Israel Causes Rift in Government
With thanks to Patrick al-Kafir and the Canine Defense Forces at Clarity and Resolve, news that in Norway, a boycott is being urged against Israeli goods. Patrick noted that on 17 December, a report by the Palestinian News Agency announced that the provincial government of Sor-Trondelag, which governs 20% of Norway's population, voted by a majority to boycott Israeli products, because it decided Israel was "no different from...Apartheid South Africa".
Now the BBC reports that 45 year old Kristin Halvorsen, of the Socialist Left party, (pictured) has decided to back the boycott. Her part is a minority member of a 3-party coalition government.
Halvorsen is the Finance Minister in the government, and told Dagblet newspaper: "It is a long time since I bought any Israeli products." She said she was expressing her party's view, and not that of the government.
The foreign ministry has responded by confirming that the government does not publicly endorse the boycott.
The comments made by Halvorsen came before the recent major stroke suffered by Ariel Sharon, the premier of Israel.
The support by Europe's left wingers for the "Palestinian cause" has recently expanded from merely attacking Israeli and US policy, but has become allied with extreme Islamist perspectives, in a union known as the "Black/Red Alliance".
