Greece: Suspected Islamists "Tortured" In Presence Of UK Agents
The UK's Independent states that three Pakistanis living in Athens, Greece, claim that they were kidnapped and tortured by intelligence agents following the London bombings of 7 July 2005. They said that they had been beaten and had endured death threats while being interrogated.
Mohammed Munir, aged 34, claims that he was beaten and had a threat made to slit his throat. He also said he was told he would be taken to England.
The governments of Greece and Britain have denied the claims. The Foreign Office of the UK has again denied that MI6 agents were present while 28 Pakistanis were interrogated in Athens. This followed a report published in a Greek newspaper, Proto Thema, which gave the name of an MI6 station chief and 8 Greek agents said to be involved. The Greek government, however, has launched an investigation into the matter.
Frangiskos Ragousis, a lawyer for several of those who claim to have been interrogated, said "We knew from the start that the people co-ordinating the operation were non-Greeks. Since then we have acquired plenty of evidence that they were MI6. We know that a British agent was in the car when five of the Pakistanis were abducted. We also know that the car used was not the type Greek intelligence normally use."
Ragousis is filing a civil suit against the people named by the Greek newspaper, on charges of abduction and torture.
"They handcuffed me, made me face the wall and started to beat me. They pulled our shirts over our heads so we couldn't see and drove us to an unknown place," Munir said. "I was there for two days, and then they took me for five days to another place, where they continued to interrogate me."
