Afghanistan: Suspected Taliban Kill Aid Worker in Mosque

Associated Press, via Sign On San Diego reports that yesterday, an aid worker, employed by a Bangladeshi group helping to ensure clean water supplies, was shot in the head while he worshipped at a mosque.

On Monday, two men on a motorbike approached the mosque in the southern province of Helmand. They walked into the mosque, shot their target, and fled on the bike. Eight people have been arrested so far as suspects.

The Taliban are suspected of involvement. The Taliban claim to be strict Sunnis of the Deoband philosophy. I find it hard to see how a "devout" Muslim group can firstly kill someone helping to provide clean water and justify it, and secondly perform an act of murder in a house of worship.

Reuters AlertNet states that the Afghan government is not happy with the progress of aid groups, and intends to question them on how they have spent their money. Between the fall of the Taliban and the end of 2004, $8.4 billion of aid money has been spent, according to UN figures. $1.6 billion was spent by the government of Afghanistan, and the rest was given to NGOs.
