US: Florida Islam Group DOES Have Links With Terror Supporters
Adorning the newsfeeds today is a feature by Florida's St Petersburg Times, and Associated Press derivatives of the article, as found in The Ledger.
The story is sold as a tale of persecution and Islamophobia, of how bloggers have caused an Islamic group to hold its three-day conference at a secret location. It was formerly scheduled to take place at Presbyterian Cedarkirk Camp and Conference Center in the countryside.
The blogsite Ace of Trump is one of the weblogs blamed for creating a fuss, because one of the guest speakers at the conference, Mazen Mokhtar, is "alleged" to be a supporter of terrorism. Ace of Trump wrote: "Nothing rings in the new year like bringing your kids to hang out with a bunch of terrorists."
The organisers of the event, the Tampa branch of the Muslim American Society (MAS) declared that the site of the conference had to be moved because of negative responses from the public. Mohammed Moharram, the president, said: "We got threats to be burned, to be destroyed. It's appalling....We're teaching the youth and the young kids the real Islam, the true Islam. Not the extremist Islam."
Reverend Debbie Bronkema, the director of Cedarkirk, said that she had received threats and, after consultation with FBI and the sheriff's office, she made the decision to temporarily close the center.
But despite the image of redneck Islamophobic persecution portrayed in the press, the allegations about Mazen Mokhtar (pictured above left) are not insubstantial. In 2004, federal investigators in Connecticut were looking into the US hosting of the jihadist websites run by UK national, Babar Ahmad, of Tooting, south London, whose Azzam Publications included websites Azzam.com and Qoqaz.com.
Azzam was used as a recruiting tool for jihad, encouraging individuals to go to Iraq, Chechnya and Afghanistan. It carried eulogies for "fallen jihadists" and it also sold paramilitary gear - camouflage clothing and night-goggles.
Mokhtar's home in New Jersey was raided, shortly after Babar Ahmad was arrested in London. Mokhtar, who is a former imam of the New Brunswick mosque, the Masjid al-Huda, is a computer programmer. In the raid, it was found that Mokhtar had a mirror-site registered in his name. He was, however, not arrested.
Evan Kohlman states "On August 6, 2001, the numeric Internet addresses for the domain Qoqaz.net were changed by its administrators to correspond directly with those of another existing domain: Minna.com. Thus, all web visitors to qoqaz.net and minna.com were likewise shown the same identical Qoqaz.net homepage. "
The website Minna.com was registered at that time to: Mokhtar, Mazen (MMZ265) mazen@ABETTERMARKET.COM Minna International Corporation 216 Bishop Blvd. North Brunswick , NJ 08902. Details can be found from Global Terror Alert, by Evan Kohlman, in a pdf download here.
On Friday, Mokhtar said he had a business as a web-server and claimed that he never knew what was contained in the website. He claims to be a "moderate".
"It is not my position now, nor has it ever been my position, that a Muslim should ever attack an innocent person," he claimed. But he is an outspoken supporter of the terrorist organisation Hamas, which decides that innocent Israeli civilians are members of an occupying force, and are therefore not "innocent", and can be blown apart legitimately.
Evan Kohlman states that Mazen Mokhtar has used the following e-mail signature: "Hamas has no victims, it only has legitimate targets." In 1993 Mazen wrote that he supported the Covenant of The Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas).
In April 1996, he wrote: Suicide bombing should be encouraged "[b]ecause it's an effective method of attacking the ennemy [sic] and continuing jihad, which is at the very least a religious requirement] on the Muslims... Those who commit suicide seek death, but martyrs are not counted as dead, as Allah said above. They seek a greater life for themselves with Allah, and a greater future for Muslims. May Allah support them, bless them and forgive us for not being with them."
Now the lying Imam, who gave talks to the New Jersey chapter of MAS in April 2004, is saying he is frustrated at having to prove his innocence.
"It's really, really sad that I have to keep repeating this," he moans. "The fact that people flew planes into buildings in New York has nothing to do with me. I wasn't one of them. I don't belong to that school of thought."
No, perhaps not. But you do belong to a school of thought which DOES support terrorist atrocities, Mr Mokhtar.
Perhaps when Babar Ahmad goes on trial in the US, we will find out the real truth of Mokhtar's involvement with Azzam publications. On November 16 the UK Home Secretary, Charles Clarke, announced that Babar Ahmad will be extradited for trial in the US. Currently he is in detention, awaiting his flight to the States.
Perhaps there is a lesson in this for everybody involved - "Lie down with dogs, and you get fleas." Or, more bluntly, "hang around with sh*t, you end up stinking."
