India: Islamist Leader Killed in Kashmir
Kashmir is being fought over by the armies of Pakistan and India, and also by Jihadists who wish to see the whole region either become an independent Muslim state, or to become absorbed by Pakistan. Already Pakistan has annexed half of the territory of Kashmir.
Today's India Daily reports that earlier on Sunday, an Islamist terrorist on a most-wanted list has been shot dead during a gunfight with troops in Kashmir.
Ghulam Qadir Mughal, a resident of Pok (Pakistan occupied Kashmir), was killed when Indian troops raided a terrorist hideout. A police statement said: "Mughal was active in Kashmir for the past many years and figured in our most-wanted list" it announced.
It is not clear if Mughal was killed in Indian Kashmir (Jammu & Kashmir state) or in PoK.
Mughal was a self-styled deputy leader of Harkatul Mujahideen, which used to go under the name Harakat al-Ansar, according to Global Security.org. It is based in Muzaffarabad, Pakistan, but concentrates its activities in Kashmir. It is financed by Saudi Arabian and Middle Eastern sources, as well as donations from Kashmiris and Pakistan. Harkatul Mujahideen has been involved in civilian and military attacks, and in December 1995 were involved in the hijacking of an Indian airliner, which led to the release of terrorist Masood Azhar, who went on to found Jaish-e-Mohammed, an even more radical group with the same aim of removing Indian control of Kashmir.
Harkatul Mujahideen has its own website where one can read propaganda by its spiritual leader, Mufti Khubaib Sahib, who regales readers with the following gems:
On those who are intellectual Muslims, who prefer to live a life of self-improvement and peace: "To them slaughtering of the inner devil is vital, but they regard the slaughtering of the enemies of Allah Ta`ala, disdainful. This limited and narrow approach to the Religious teachings and practices, turn them away from other essential and important Teachings of Islam."
On Hinduism - "The whole history of the Hindu religion revolves around women and money. Every historical war was waged because of a woman or because of money."
On India and Kashmir: "The respected Ulema and the religious leaders were replaced by corrupt and bent leaders. These opportunist leaders have played such an active part in the fragmentation of the Unity and strength of the Muslimun, that perhaps the fascist Hindus could not do any better themselves. In spite of all this, now the Muslimun of India are once again looking up at their shining past. Aware of the impending danger and preparing themselves to face the situation and their passion for the Jihaad and the desire for the Martyrdom is becoming alive once again. And it is also heart warming comfort to them that by the Blessing of Allah Ta`ala they are receiving the external support and assistance in their struggle."
The introductory slogan on the home page states:
" And why should ye not fight in the cause of Allah and of those who, being weak, are ill-treated (and oppressed)? Men, women, and children, whose cry is: "Our Lord! rescue us from this town, whose people are oppressors; and raise for us from thee one who will protect;and raise for us from thee one who will help!"
And also "We are in the struggle, fighting against the barbaric and wicked Indian Army to rescue & save our downtrodden helpless Kashamiri [sic] Muslim brothers."
