Israel: Gaza Kidnap Britons Freed

The British aid worker, 23-year old Kate Burton, who was kidnapped with her visiting parents in the Gaza Strip, have been freed, states Reuters.

Kate Burton, who works for Al Mazen, a Palestinian human rights group which documents problems caused by Israel, had been snatched with parents Helen and Hugh by armed men, near the Rafah border crossing in the south Gaza Strip, on December 28.

A British Muslim group, the Muslim Association of Britain, had planned to send an envoy to negotiate with the kidnappers.

Ms Burton's job documenting human rights abuses claimed to be caused by Israelis brought a widespread reaction from Palestinians, who condemned her being held hostage.

The group who kidnapped the family are a previously unheard-of group, the Brigades of the Mujahideen-Jerusalem. It claimed it had seized the Britons to demand that Britain pressurise Israel for its treatment of Palestinians, and it had released the Burtons as a goodwill gesture.
