Singapore: Islamic Teachers To Be Registered

News from Japan Today, the Hindustan Times and DNA India states that in Singapore, compulsory for Islamic teachers to undergo registration, in an attempt to prevent some with extreme attitudes being disseminated.

Islamic teachers have been registered on a voluntary basis since 2002, after Ibrahim Maidin, a local religious teacher, was arrested, and authorities claimed that he belonged to Jemaah Islamiyah, the group responsible for the Bali bombings of 2002 and October 1 this year. Apparently Maidin tried to recruit terrorists for JI from his students.

It is hoped that by March, 800 religious teachers will have been registered. In a statement issued by the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore, it is said that religious teachers will have to pass a panel of Muslim leaders before they are given validation.

"This scheme serves to provide recognition to qualified, trained and experienced asatizah for their knowledge in Islamic matters and education," the statement read. The Islamic Religious Council (MUIS) is a government statutory body.

Those who do not have the proper qualifications will be allowed to call themselves asatizahs and conduct lessons from their homes.

The population of SIngapore is predominantly Chinese, who comprise 76% of the population of 3.4 million residents, while Muslims, who are ethnically Malay, comprise 13.7%.
