Australia: NSW Islamic Council Leader Claims Beach Riots Will Not Recur

Ali RoudeThe Australian reports that the spokesperson for the New South Wales Islamic Council, Ali Roude (pictured) has confirmed that a meeting of key community leaders and municipal representatives should now mean no more repeats of the notorious riots and factional unrest, which took place after incidents on Cronulla Beach, Sydney.

"We are confident we have been successful that the riot that occurred on that day was the first and the last, he said. "We are comfortable that everyone is committed and we have proven to the international community in relation to the riots that we have been successful in repressing it, and repressing it for good."

Mr Roude is also the chairman of the NSW Islamic Council's executive committee. The NSWIC was founded in 1976. Ali Roude arrived in Australia with his family of eleven (!) in 1971. He is the father of five children. In 1988, he received the Order of Australia, (Queen's Medal) for outstanding services to the Muslim communities. He is also the principal of Rissalah College, a school for primary pupils aged from kindergarten to six.

Simon Kearney, author of the article in the Australian, states that the NSW government do not share Roude's enthusiasm. They have fears that New Year's Day and Australia Day are going to be dates when the violence, between mostly white Australians and Lebanese Muslim gangs, may flare up again.

Currently in Belmore, in the southwest of Sydney, there is a racist graffiti campaign going on, which has been dismissed by local police as probably the work of juveniles.
