UK: Muslim MP Condemns Fuss Over School Name Change
The UK Sun has reported that a school in Bordesley, Birmingham, is the centre of an outcry over its proposed change of name from its existing "Christian" one.
The bosses of the council have decided that the 150 year old school, St Andrews Junior and Infants, needs a new name. The council claims the name change should reflect the current use of the school as it now also being used by a nursery and children's centre.
The area in which the school is situated comprises a population which is 62 % from ethnic backgrounds, and there are fears that the name change is being connected to this. The school stands next to St Andrews, the Birmingham City FC soccer ground.
The Sun quotes MP for Sutton Coldfield (a nearby Birmingham constituency) Andrew Mitchell (Conservative) who said he felt an "element of political correctness about this."
Birmingham MP Khalid Mahmood (pictured) said: "This doesn't help the Muslim community at all."
The context of Mr Mahmood's statement is confusing. It appears that he is saying that the change of name is the source of probable no-goodness for Muslims, but J. Grant Swank Jnr in American Daily is in no doubt. In an impassioned piece, he states that Mr Mahmood almost certainly is referring to the fuss which is being kicked up about the name change from a Christian-sounding monicker, rather than the re-titling itself.
