Saudi Arabia: Islamist Killer Captured, Dies In Custody
From Ireland Online, the Chicago Tribune and AP via Forbes and CNN: - reports that a leading Islamist militant went on a killing spree which led to his being shot, catured, and then dying in Saudi police custody, as reported by Saudi Arabia's Interior Ministry.
Mohammed Abdel-Rahman Mohammed al-Suwailmi yesterday shot at a police patrol while driving outside Buraydah city, 210 miles northwest of Riyadh. He killed two police officers.
He drove on southwest towards Al-Midnab, 12 miles away. He came to a security checkpoint near the town of Miznub, where he shot and killed three more police officers.
He was then shot and wounded in a police car chase, and he was captured. Three Kalzhnikovs, five pistols, ammunition, fake registration plates, and about $123,500 in Saudi rials. Al-Suwailmi died in custody.
23-year old Al-Suwailmi was number 7 on a list of 15 Islamist and al-Qaeda militants resident in the kingdom who are "wanted" by the Saudi authorities. He is the eighth on the list to be killed or captured. There are 21 others on the list who are believed to be currently abroad.
There were mistaken reports in September that al-Suwailmi had been killed with four others in a police shoot-out in Damman city in the east, but he released an internet audio denying the statements.
There has been an ongoing war against militancy, with numerous attacks against Saudi and western interests since May 2003.
