Trinidad: Bomb Discovered At Home of Jamaat Muslims

Yasin ABu BakrThe Trinidadian Islamic organisation Jamaat al Muslimeen is headed by 64-year old Yasin Abu Bakr (pictured), who is currently in jail awaiting full trial for charges of sedition, incitement and terrorism.

Bakr is also going to be retried in a separate case for making an order for two expelled members of the group to be killed. He is still undergoing the pre-trial hearings for the sedition/terrorism case.

In 1990, Bakr and Jamaat al Muslimeen led a coup against the Trinidad and Tobago government, hijacking the television station. 24 people were killed and, bizarrely, Bakr and a core group of 114 members never received punishment.

There have been four bomb attacks in Trinidad's capital since summer, Port of Spain, which have injured about 25 people. These attacks started on Tuesday July 12 with the last bomb hitting a nightclub at St James on the outskirts of the capital on the evening of Friday October 14. Bakr was arrested after the last bomb, but released a few days later.

The Associated Press, via the Jamaica Observer today states that a bomb was discovered on Friday at the residence of two Jamaat al Muslimeen male members, who have now been arrested.

Police made the announcement yesterday (24th Dec). The raid had involvedarmy and police, and a senior police source, speaking under condition of anonymity, said that the bomb, which had wires, antennae and timers, was being packaged by the two at the time of the swoop.

The Police Commissioner, Trevor Paul, confirmed the claims made in TV reports that Jamaat al Muslimeen was involved, but said he could not give out much information as investigations were continuing.

The two men were apparently planning to leave the island. Two plane tickets were found at the rented address in Arima, 10 miles east of Port of Spain. Police received a tip-off that the two men, aged 31 and 32, were planning to set off the device before fleeing. Police did not reveal the man's destination.
