Thailand: Bomb Wounds Seven In Muslim South

Reuters reports that in the early hours of Friday, a bomb exploded in the southern Thai province of Narathiwat outside a tea shop. Police blame Islamists, and say the bomb was hidden in a car parked outside the tea shop which is visited by local officials. The tea shop is 100 yards from a police station in Narathiwat town.

Two of the seven wounded had severe injuries. Deputy Prime Minister Chidchai Vanasatidya told reporters that the authorities were making progress against the insurgency, which has continued for two years in the south, and has killed 1,000.

The militancy is taking place in the three southern provinces of Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat, which are predominantly Muslim. Formerly they comprised a separate Muslim nation, called Pattani, which was annexed by the King of Siam a century ago.

Last Friday, the 16 December, a Thai police officer was killed, shot twice in the head by suspected Islamists in Yala as he went to work. The 32-year old man was a Muslim intelligence officer attached to the Yala provincial police.

Last week was, until Friday, fairly peaceful. On Thursday 15th, a search on a suspect's house in the Sai Buri district of Pattani recovered a large cache of weapons and ammunition, and explosives. Hamdi Ayu, 20, a religious teacher, owned the house. Hamdi fled at the time of the raid, which was carried out by 100 paramilitary rangers and police, acting on a tip-off. Hamdi was arrested later, stated the Bangkok Post.
