UK: Muslim Offended By Alcohol Prizes Loses Claim

This story first emerged on November 24 when the Daily Telegraph reported that a Muslim insurance salesman had claimed he was suffering religious discrimination.

25 year old Imran Khan said that his employer's firm had target-incentives of bottles of wine, to encourage sales performance. As a Muslim, Khan claimed that he was at a disadvantage because he is prohibited from consuming alcohol by his religion.

He was attending an industrial tribunal in Bristol, southwest England. Khan worked for Direct Line Insurance as one of a fourteen person team, who sold pet and household insurance policies.

Tariq Sadiq, speaking on the company's behalf, stated that there had been another Muslim worker who had won an alcoholic prize in a sales-incentive scheme, and he had exchanged the prize for an alternative.

British-born Imran Khan, who lives in Bristol, was seeking damages for "hurt feelings" under the terms of the Employment Equality (Religion or Belief) Regulations. The employment tribunal reserved its judgement.

Today, the Telegraph states that yesterday the tribunal rejected Mr Khan's claim.

Clive Toomer, the chairman of the panel at the tribunal, said that a teetotal non-Muslim would have been placed in the same position.
