Morocco: Islamist Deported From Italy Is Acquitted

M. DakiWe reported on November 28 on the case of Mohamed Daki (pictured), who was acquitted in a controversial court case. Daki was originally sentenced for recruiting people for fighting insurgencies in Iraq, but in January 2005, Judge Clementina Forleo had ruled that the insurgency which Daki assisted was a "guerrilla" operation, rather than a "terror" operation.

The ruling which had caused outrage in January, was again upheld by Forleo at an appeals court in Milan in November, causing the Italian Foreign Minister, Gianfranco Fini, to declare his "anger and incredulity" for the "distortion of reality before the entire world."

Daki, who had connections with Islamist terror group Ansar al-Islam, had shared apartments in Germany with members of the Hamburg Cell, who helped arrange the 9/11 US attacks. He was arrested in 2003 after crossing into Italy.

Daki said after his acquittal that he was planning to stay in Italy to study and find work. However, Italy acted swiftly after his acquittal on terror charges, and deported him to his home country of Morocco. Now, according to Findlaw, Daki has been acquitted again.

He was deported from Italy on Sunday, 11 December. According to a Moroccan news agency, MAP, on Thursday, a court in Morocco threw out terror charges against him. Another man, Younes Zaralil, was detained for further investigation of links with terror groups.
