Spain: Another Algerian Islamist Arrested

A 31-year old Algerian, Hichem Kanit, has been arrested in Alicante in the southeast of Spain, police revealed earlier today. His arrest follows a spate of arrests in Spain, with 11 people detained on November 23 at Alicante, Murcia and Granada. On November 30, four of these were charged.

Seven Algerians were arrested on December 9 in the Costa del Sol, with three of these charged on Wednesday December 14 for collaborating with an armed group. The others, including a woman, were released later.

Those charged were accused of financing the Algerian terror group, the Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat (GSPC), which has links to al-Qaeda.

Hichem Kanit is thought to have links with the eleven-person gang whose members were arrested on November 23.Ynet News states that he was apprehended as he tried to flee the country. He was trying to leave via a ferry going from Alicante to Algiers. He was concealed in a van.

Expatica states that Kanit was detained after information was obtained from those arrested in the raids of November 23.

The GSPC was founded in Algeria in 1992, and is currently still active in Algeria, having refused an offer of amnesty on October 1, though they are active in Spain, France and Italy.
