UK: Anger After Non-Halal Meat Is Served To Muslims

The Birmingham Post reports on a cock-up which took place at a dinner event for 750, organised by Birmingham's Chamber of Commerce which took place at the International Conference Centre. The event, an annual dinner of the Institute of Asian Businesses, had a confusion with its menus, which led to some 200 Muslims being served non-halal food even though they thought they were opting for halal. Halal meat must be prepared by slitting the throat of an animal and draining the blood before the creature dies, according to Islamic custom.

The Chamber of Commerce admitted the mistake and promised to be more careful in future. The vice-chair of the Institute of Asian Businesses, Mohammed Zulfiquar, said: "I am disgusted. I will be writing to the chief executive of the ICC for an explanation."

"I asked the chair of the dinner committee and he said it was halal. I also asked the waitress and she said everything was halal. But this week I was in a meeting at the Chamber and was told only the chicken was halal and not the lamb and beef," he said. "People ate it because they were told it was halal. The Muslim community is deeply, deeply offended."

The International Conference Centre is owned by the NEC Group, which said that it had provided both halal and non-halal food, as requested.
