France: Explosives Discovered Following Islamist Arrests

SarkozyEarlier today, we reported that there had been 25 arrests on Monday 12th December, 25 suspected Islamists were arrested in Paris and Oise, with three more arrested today.

Yesterday, Niicolas Sarkozy, the French Interior Minister (pictured), said that the individuals arrested on Monday, who are thought to be involved with the Algerian group the Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat (GSPC), were also indirectly linked to Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the leader of al-Qaeda in Iraq.

Via Little Green Footballs, a report from Reuters states that Nicolas Sarkozy has announced the discovery of a cache of explosives and weaponry as a part of the inquiry.

The stash was discovered yesterday (Wednesday 14th) in a lock-up garage attached to an apartment block in Clichy-Sous-Bois, the Parisian suburb where the recent French riots started.

"Thanks to the arrests, an arms cache has just been discovered which reveals the seriousness of this matter. They are very determined people, with links between terrorist extremism and major crime," Sarkozy said on French television today. "We think they have indirect links, at a fairly high level, with al Qaeda".
