Iran: Russia's Mufti Praises Regime For Reviving "Real Islam"
An article from Iran's IRNA (Islamic Republic News Agency), reproduced in full:
Majlis speaker underlines integration of religion, politics
Iran's Majlis Speaker Gholam-Ali Haddad-Adel on Tuesday ruled out the idea that religion is separated from politics, saying such an idea is spread by dictators and their protege regimes.
Imam Khomeini, founder of Islamic Republic, rejected the idea and introduced Islam as a universal religion to the world, he noted in a meeting with Chairman of the Council of Muftis of Russia, Mufti Sheikh Ravil Gainutdin.
He maintained that the victory of the Islamic Revolution in Iran as well as the disintegration of the former Soviet Union are regarded as the major events taking place in the 20th century.
"We are pleased that Russian Muslims now enjoy more freedom after the collapse (of the former Soviet Union)," he said, adding that the geographical proximity of the two powerful countries (Iran and Russia) would serve to restore security and stability to the world.
The Iranian official appreciated the support Russian clerics have shown to the suppressed Palestinians and their efforts to observe the Qods Day initiated by the late Imam Khomeini.
The Islamic Revolution in Iran is considered as the most important event in the contemporary era which has revived the real Islam in the world, said the Russian Mufti Gainutdin.
He likened the message of Imam Khomeini to Gorbachev to a messenger's message, saying, "At that time, Gorbachev confessed that he was thrilled by the philosophical content of the message." Elsewhere, he said that promotion of relations between Iran and Russia will serve the interests of both nations and those of the region.
He also hailed Iran's support for Palestinians and said that Russian Muslims support Iran's stance towards Palestine.
He thanked Iran's cooperation with Russia within the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC).
Haddad Adel, heading a parliamentary delegation, arrived in Moscow for a three-day visit Monday at the invitation of his Russian counterpart.
COMMENTARY: Despite the implications within the article, Russian Mufti Gainutdin, is not THE Russian Mufti, Muhammedgali Khuzin.
We have mentioned Rival Gainutdin before, on December 2 where he was venting his outrage against a controversial book written by Roman Silantyev, executive secretary of the Inter-Religious Council. This book was made the subject of rancour because it claimed that there were 500,000 and 1,000,000 extremist Muslims in Russia. Gainutdin threatened to leave the Inter-Religious Council unless it condemned the book.
In September, Gainutdin demanded that Muslims should have their own vice-presidential post to have representation in the Russian government.
The OIC conference was attended by a delegation from Russia, which included another Mufti, the Chief Mufti of Tatarstan, Gusman-hazrat, who had argued that the Russian national flag is too "Christian".
Gainutdin, who is chairman of the Russian Council of Muftis, discussed in October the need for Russia to be included in the 57 states of the OIC.
"Russia's joining the OIC is the support by authorities of our country of the Muslim umma of Russia," said Mufti Gainutdin. "This is one more testimony to the fact that the followers of Islam in Russia can freely profess their religion, as well as continually be in touch with fellow believers both within and outside the country."What is worrying is that Gainutdin appears to endorse the virulent anti-semitism of the Iranian regime. The celebration of Al Quds Day (28 October) is nothing more than an Orwellian "12 hours of hate" against Israel, celebrated by bizarre and blindly anti-Jewish and anti-Israeli cartoons broadcast on the day.
The "real Islam" of Iran, as practised by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, is a reversion to the first days of the Ayatollah, and a deliberate retalliation against 7 years of reforming influences, most popularly represented by the last president, Ayatollah Khatami.
Ahmadinejad has once again unleashed his anti-Jewish invective, and is still talking about removing Israel entirely, and relocating its population to Europe or America. He dismisses the Holocaust as a "myth", according to Bloomberg today.
Russia is an ally with Iran, but has criticised the vicious anti-semitic remarks coming from Iran's dangerous and delusional hardline president. If Gainutdin really believes what he is saying about how great an exemplar of "real Islam" Iran is, when it is rapidly being turned into an authoritarian and totalitarian state, I fear for Russia's Muslims. If the best example of an Islamic country is Iran, then this Mufti may decide to try and see that same medievalist interpretation brought about in Russia.
When Russian civilians were held hostage in the Moscow Nord-Ost theatre siege by Chechen Islamists in October 2002, Gainutdin led prayers for the hostages. He held prayers on juma-namaz day at Moscow Cathedral Mosque, the main mosque of Russian Muslims, to ask for the hostages' safety. Gaunutdin seems to forget that one of the first actions of Iran's Islamist Revolution was to break all international law and allow the staff of the US embassy in Tehran to be held hostage.
Iran is ruled by a despot, who aims to have a nuclear weapon. One hopes Ahmadinejad never gets a chance to own nuclear weaponry. He is stupid enough to use it.
