UK: Man Jailed For Assaulting Disabled Mosque Leader
A report from the BBC states that Richard Wallace from Rotherhithe, London, aged 27 (pictured) attacked an imam in Maidstone.
The 53-year old imam, Arshed Mahmood, needs crutches to walk. As he was leaving his mosque on August 21 this year, Wallace attacked him.
Wallace, who had been drinking before the incident, punched the imam in the face, hit him with a beer glass, and threw his crutches away. He shouted racist and obscene language as he assaulted Mr Mahmood.
Wallace, formerly a ticket inspector on London Transport, pleaded guilty at Maidstone Crown Court to assault causing grievous bodily harm, and was sentenced to three years' jail for the attack. Because the offence was deemed "racially aggravated", Wallace received a further 18 months' imprisonment.
The judge, Andrew Patience, said: "Racism, in whatever form, is an evil that society will not tolerate."
