Spain: Seven Algerian Islamists Detained
News from Reuters, Xinhua and China People's Daily state that at least seven people have been arrested in Spain on terrorism charges.
Reuters stated that seven men and one woman, all Algerians, have been arrested in the region of the Costa del Sol, accused of fundraising for the banned Algerian terror group, the Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat (GSPC). The individuals are currently being detained at Malaga.
Arrests began on Thursday night at coastal locations, including in the southern resorts of Torremolinos and Marbella.
Police released a few basics to a radio station, but are not giving more information at present.
On November 23, 10 people were arrested in Spain in connection with the GSPC. Four of these appeared in court on November 30, charged with fundraising and supplying logistical support to a terror organisation.
If any relevant news arrives on these arrests, we will provide updates. Reuters has already updated the story and revised the figure arrested down to seven. They quote from a press statement made by Jose Antonio Alonso, the Spanish Interior Minister: "There is nothing which might lead us to think they had plans for imminent attacks in Spain."
The earlier figure of eight detainees came from a radio report, and now the Interior Ministry is suggesting that there may be more arrests made, possibly making a total of ten, which would include two women.
Police state that the detainees are known to have links with others in European countries, and police from several EU nations have been contacted and informed.
