Syria: Eight Armed Islamists Killed
The Jerusalem Post reports that eight Islamists were killed in a gun battle with security forces in Syria earlier today.
The location was a farmhouse in Idlib, 200 miles north of Damascus. The shoot out ended when the remaining extremists who had hidden out at the farmhouse blew themselves up. This was the second battle with insurgents this week.
On Wednesday, Syrian authorities announced the discovery of a bomb-making factory in Aleppo, a city in the north. Accompanying the finds were manuals detailing how to attack security headquarters and public buildings.
The US has urged Damascus to keep insurgents from entering Iraq via Syria. There has been an intensive campaign of late, against Islamic extremists. The background to the current operation is unclear. The Syrians have implied the militants were linked to Iraq, but whether they were leaving to go to Iraq, or planning to stay and make attacks against Syrian targets is unknown.
