Thailand: Mosque Leader One of Two Muslims Shot

Dawn reports that two more Muslims have been shot dead in the south of the country.

64-year old Muslim cleric Tayae Ladeng was the imam of a mosque. As he travelled to a meeting of district imams in the province of Narathiwat on Tuesday, he was shot dead by two unidentified gunmen.

On Monday, late at night, a 54 year old Muslim school janitor was shot twice as he returned home from work on his motorcycle, in the neighbouring province of Pattani.

His assailants are said by police to be militants. The police are repeating claims regularly now that most of the Muslims killed in the south are murdered by Islamists for being "collaborators".

The Bangkok Post states that the incident with he imam was from Ban Bango Saraeka mosque. The shooting happened as he was on his motorcycle at 10 am, riding to the meeting.

He was followed by two men on a motorcycle, along the Tanyongmas-Tanyong Limo road until the pillion rider fired two shots from a .9mm gun, both of which hit Taye Ladeng in the back.

Nation states that Ladeng came from the village of Tanyong Limo. We reported earlier on the death of two Thai marines, who were held hostage and then killed by villagers from Tanyong Limo. On 21 September, 2005 people defied the military, who were trying to negotiate the release of the two bound hostages. Hundreds of women barred the road leading to the village, and before negotiators could get through, the men were killed.
