Belgium: Muslim Prisoners "To Be Bugged"
That's right - bugged, not buggered. Iran's Islamic Republic News Agency - IRNA, has announced that the head of the Belgian State Security Service, Koen Dassen, told "De Morgen" on Monday that prisons were breeding grounds for extremists, but did not mention bugging directly. Here is the article in full. Judge for yourselves.
Belgium's prison cells to be bugged to prevent Muslim inmates from becoming "fundamentalists"
The Belgian State Security Service and the Belgian Prisons Directorate are working on a plan to prevent young Muslim detainees from turning to fundamentalism while they are in jail.
'Flandernews' website quoted the head of the Belgian State Security Service, Koen Dassen, as telling the Belgian daily 'De Morgen' Monday that prisons offer the kind of environment where extremists can meet other extremists with relative ease.
Dassen did not reveal what measures are to be taken to tackle the problem, but he did say that they will come into force within the next 12 months.
It is thought that the Belgian State Security Service and prison officers will place bugging devices in cells and communal areas in prisons.
This was neither confirmed nor denied by the security service's chief, said the paper.
Dassen said that punishment received in prison can serve to make some convicts feel even more bitter and alienated from society.
He cited the example of the young Dutch Muslim, Mohamed B, who was convicted of the murder of controversial filmmaker Theo Van Gogh.
Mohamed B. has managed to send inflammatory material to fellow fundamentalists from his prison cell, said the paper.
Mohamed B is Mohamed Bouyeri.
