Bangladesh: Islamist Mastermind Caught With Bomb

Gazipur map.gifThe Daily Star reports that on Monday, a mastermind of the Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) has been captured in Gazipur (mauve in map) district.

26-year old militant Enayetullah Ujjal is assumed to be the bomb-maker and recruiter of the suicide attacks which happened last week in Gazipur City courthouse.

On Monday morning, security officers stormed a house near Joydevpur, 30km north of Dhaka city, at 4.00 am and found Enayetullah Ujjal adding finishing touches to a near-active bomb. He confessed to interrogators that he had intended to set the bomb in Gazipur town at 9.00 am.

His arrest came after a tip-off from suspects who were under interrogation in Chittagong (navy on map). The courthouse at Chittagong town had similarly been attacked last week on Tuesday, and two members of the suicide squad, Milon Islam Mithu and Akasj were arrested in Chittagong on Saturday. They gave Enayetullah Ujjal's address, leading to his arrest.

Enayetullah Ujjal's wife, small son and babysitter were brought in at his arrest. He admitted his role as master of operations in Gazipur district, and said that he had given a bomb to Abdur Razzak. Dressed as a tea boy, Razzak had charged at a police checkpoint at Gazipur courthouse on Dec 1, and detonated his bomb. Though this bomb managed to kill two policeman at the spot, Abdur Razzak managed to survive.

A tenth victim from the Gazipur attacks died on Monday, bringing the death toll for both blasts. The man who died was assistant public prosecutor Anwarul Azim, who was injured in the earlier attack of November 29. He died in Dhaka Medical College and Hospital.

Gazipur DetaineesFollowing Ujjal's arrest, and his disclosure of locations of JMB dens in Gazipur, several mosques were raided and 26 people were apprehended. (Seven of those individuals taken from Gazipur are shown in the picture).

The bright green area of the map above is Tangail, which we mentioned yesterday as the home district of suicide-bomber Hossain Ali, who survived for two days after detonating his suicide bomb at Chittagong courthouse. Both his legs and both hands were ripped aff, but he gave information of JMB hideouts in Sakhipur in Tangail. He killed two police officers at a checkpoint outside the courthouse.

In other news, the JMB has again threatened to blow up the Supreme Court Bar Association building, following an earlier threat which we reported earlier.

In total, 44 suspected JMB members have been arrested on Monday, from various parts of the country.
