South Africa: Muslim Group Condemns Gay Legal Judgement

The South African Sunday Times reports that a decision by the country's Consitutional Court was made on Friday, whereby the institution of same-sex marriages were deemed "recognised". Parliament has also agreed to change the Marriage Act by next year to include same-sex unions as recognised marriages.

Predictably, one Muslim group has gone into apoplexy, which was expressed in a statement from the KwaZulu Natal branch of the Council of Muslim Theologians:

"Same sex marriages are a violation of the limits prescribed by the Almighty, a reversal of the natural order, a moral disorder and a crime against humanity."

"No person is born homosexual, just like no one is born a thief, a liar or murderer. People acquire these evil habits because of widespread nude and shameless social interaction."

Homosexuality deprived a man of his manhood and a woman of her womanhood and led to the destruction of family life.

"The Jamiatul Ulama (KwaZulu-Natal) views the judgment as a step backward which will have serious repercussions on the moral and social fabric of society."

The statement is rather predictable and unsurprising. I am sure there will be similar letters of condemnation emanating from several Christian organisations on this issue.
