Israel: Islamist Suspect Was Funding Families of Terrorists
Today, Arutz Sheva announced that Ahmed Saltana, a member of Hamas who was arrested in Jenin in the West Bank several months ago, his case was only cleared for publication today. Saltana was a head of the Jenin Charity Funds Committee, which was officially outlawed on June 30, 2002. However, despite prohibitions, the committee continued to act as a conduit for funds to go to the families of terrorists.
The organisation gathered $1m annually via various charities which was given in monthly "wage-packets" to the families of suicide bombers, to prisoners and Hamas terrorists to reward them for terrorist acts.
Saltana started work in the Hamas organisation, the Jenin Charity Funds Committee, in the late 1980s and has headed its office since 1996. Israel believes that the arrest and future trial of Saltana will remove much of the financial incentive which has thitherto been available for terrorists and the families of suicide bombers.
With great apologies to Israeli readers and others for being a bit lax with reporting Israeli issues. The reason being that stories were overlapping. A brief recap now of events since Wednesday.
Wednesday 23: One Arab terrorist was killed and two arrested in Jenin during a gun battle early in the day which wounded more than a dozen Arabs and also three IDF border guards. Arutz Sheva reports that the scene of the fighting, a four-storey building, was later bombarded by artillery shells, aimed at a suspect believed to be remaining inside. Later security forces began to tear the building down.
Thursday 24:News comes out that in the above incident, before the building could be torn down fully, two terrorists inside, both senior leaders in the Islamic Jihad organisation, came out from the house and gave themselves up, state Free Republic and Mercury News.
The individuals who gave themselves up are Iyad Abu A-Roub, a senior Islamic Jihad commander, and Firas Abu A-Roub, his deputy. Both were on Israeli "wanted" lists. The former is wanted for attacks on Hadera market, which killed six, the Stage Club attack in Tel Aviv from February, which killed five, and also a suicide bombing in Netanya in summer, which killed five.
During the night of Wednesday/Thursday in Shechem, the IDF arrested two Islamic Jihad terrorists on a wanted list, and also one Hamas operative. In Bethlehem and Ramallah three other terrorists were arrested.
Friday 25:Ynet News and Arutz Sheva announce that during the siege against Iyad Abu A-Roub (aka Iyad Abu Arub), a former Muslim terrorist who is now a strong supporter of Israel, Zakaria Zubeidi had intervened to help negotiate the surrender of Arub senior and Arub deputy. Zubeidi was acting at the behest of the Knesset. A former member of the Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigade, Zubeidi was summoned by Mohammed Barakeh, an Israeli Arab MP.
Saturday 26:Arutz Sheva provide a recap of events from late Friday through to the Sabbath: North of Kabatia, IDF force has bomb thrown at it....Southwest of Hevron a Hamas operative is arrested, at Hawarah, two Palestinian Authority residents try to smuggle ammunition across a border checkpoint and get themselves arrested - At the Ma'arat HaMachpela (Cave of the Patriarchs) two knife-wielding Arabs are arrested - in the el-Hader area, two firebombs thrown at Israeli motorists...North of Kissufim, IDF border patrol is shot at... four PA "infiltrators" crossing into Green Line Israel apprehended at Gaza's Erez Crossing. Amazingly, in all these incidents on the Sabbath, no injuries were reported.
