Philippines: Fifteen Islamists Killed on Jolo

According to the China Post, yesterday (Friday) an army general announced that 16 of the Islamist rebels currently engaged in a guerilla war on the island of Jolo were killed.

The rebels are from a coalition of the Muslim terror group Abu Sayyaf and rebels from the Moro National Liberation Front, (MNLF).

The incident near Indanan town on the island of Jolo, whose fighting we have described earlier, took place after two S-211 trainer jets with rockets and bombs, and two US OV-10B ground assault planes made air strikes over the region, destroying concrete bunkers and forcing rebels into the open.

The deaths were not attributed to the air strikes, but to an hour-long gun battle which followed after the area had been strafed. "The enemy casualties were the result of a ground assault, not by the air strikes," Brigadier-General Nehemias Pajarito told press.

He said that the figure of 15 dead was gained from intercepted radio traffic but could be much higher. Six soldiers had been wounded in the assault.

Since November 11 and the initial skirmish which triggered the current ongoing conflict, six soldiers have been killed and 33 wounded.

In separate news, the China Daily reports today that three rebels were killed and two captured in Leyte province, 375 miles southeast of Manila, late Thursday. The incident here involved atheists, not Islamists. Troops were fighting with 60 members of the communist rebels, the New People's Army.
