Russia: Three Islamists Are Jailed

News from Novosti tells that three members of the extremist international Muslim group, Hizb ut-Tahrir have been convicted in the regional centre of Nizhny Novgorod of spreading terrorist propaganda.

The three men were convicted today. The leader of the group, Al-Julaidi Ammar Mahmoud, who is a Russian citizen, has been sentenced to four years, eight months imprisonment. Mahmoud was born in "Palestine".

His accomplices, who were born in Daghestan in the Caucasus received lesser sentences. Magdomed Nurmagomedov was given three years jail, while Yusup Magamedov was given two months.

In a tactic increasingly employed by Hizb ut-Tahrir, especially in Britain, the three recruited Muslims while purporting to be selling another agenda. In the case of the three convicted today, they used the guise of inviting people to study Islam and Arabic.

MosNews states that 11 people were originally arested in October 2001 under suspicion of terrorst activity. Grenades were seized by police, and also materials calling for the establishment of a world-wide Caliphate and the overthrow of non-Muslim governments. Only the three above were taken to court. They pleaded guilty to the charges against them and "expressed repentance in the court".
