Bangladesh: Raid on Islamists' Hideout Reveals Bomb Paraphernalia

In Bangladesh on Tuesday, police unearthed a stash of bomb-making materials and explosives in a Jamaatul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) hideout in Rangpur. The story is covered by New Nation, Bangladesh's Independent">, and by the Daily Star.

As well as the bomb paraphernalia, combat training books, a list of future attack targets, letters from detained JMB cadres, and the cellphone numbers of 50 police officials were recovered in the raid, which was triggered by a tip-off. Also recovered were documents including two cheque books and the passports of Ataur Rahman and Aminul Islam. Ataur Rahman is the brother of the head of JMB, and is believed to have helped organise financing for the national bomb-attacks on August 17. He is also an Imam in a British mosque, according to New India Monitor. A quantity of CDs were also recovered, which may give further information on JMB members, activities and plans.

The cache was discovered by police, working with RAB (Rapid Action Battalion) who raided the second floor of a three-storey house at Noorpur. The house was the lair of Abdul Awal, who is the son-in-law of Abdur Rahman, the JMB chief. We reported earlier on the arrest of Abdul Awal at Thakurgaon, while he was travelling on a bus with four accomplices on November 18.
