Indonesia: Three Arrested In Australian Embassy Bomb Inquiry

On Thursday September 9, 2004, the Australian Embassy in Jakarta was attacked by a suicide van bombing which killed 11 people, mostly Indonesian guards and passers-by. The bomb left a crater three meters deep. More than a year later, a spokesman for the Jakarta Police has announced the arrest of three individuals in connection with the bombing.

The three, whose identities are given only as Fatkhurrahman, Bukhori and Yasin Al-Reza, were apprehended at separate locations in Pekalongan on the northern coast of central Java. They were arrested on Thursday, November 17.

abc.net states that the Indonesian newspaper, Indo Pos has said that the three were also believed to be associates of Noordin Top, the man who recently featured in a notorious video threatening more attacks. Top is the main financier and recruiter for Jemaah Islamiyah.

Top is thought to have worked with Azahari bin Husin on preparing the 2002 Bali bombings. He is currently the subject of a nationwide manhunt.

The names of the three suspects came out during interrogations of other suspects and also from seized documents. Investigators are trying to ascertain in the three were involved in the Bali attacks of 2002 and also October 1 this year, and also the bombing of the JW Marriott hotel in Jakarta, which killed 12 people.

Six people have already been accused of involvement of the plot to send an explosives-laden van into the Australian Embassy compound. The first to be charged was Irun Hidayat in March 2005. He was sentenced in July for being an accessory, for providing shelter for the bombing plotters. He received a term of three years in jail.

We reported in September that one of these, a man called Darmawan was sentenced to death for helping to plot the attack.
