Philippines: Muslim Insurgency in Jolo - Soldier Killed

Radio Australia earlier announced that a soldier has been killed in renewed clashes in the Philippines island of Jolo in Sulu province.

Brigadier-General Alexander Aleo said that fighting between Filipino armed forces and Islamic rebels, when the military encountered a group of 100 members of Abu Sayyaf near the town of Indanan.

English people.com states that since the current insurgency began on 11 November, five soldiers have been killed and 25 wounded.

An estimated 25 rebels have been killed, and 5,000 residents forced to vacate their homes from three villages because of the clashes. We reported earlier that civilians have been harassed in their homes by the rebels. The Muslim rebels are mostly comprised of Abu Sayyaf members, who are acting in an alliance with rebel members of the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF).

The Dose also states that Tuesday night's conflict was the first major conflict since last week, when troops based in Panamao town were attacked with mortar fire.

Sporadic fighting continued through the night on Tuesday/Wednesday.
