Thailand: Muslims Decapitate Buddhist Man in South
A Buddhist man, who worked as a garbage fee collector has been decapitated and dismembered in Pattani province, southern Thailand, states Reuters. The head and the torso of the 31 year old man were discovered in two fertiliser bags along the highway.
An officer at Nonjik police station suggested that the man had been attacked in the night, and had not had time to use his pistol.
30,000 troops are based in the southern provinces which are the scenes of the Muslim insurgence (Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat), but the violence appears to be increasing and becoming more "efficient" in its targetting.
The garbage fee collector was the second Buddhist to be beheaded this month, and the fourteenth decapitation case in the period of insurgency by Muslims who wish to secede from Thailand. 1,000 people have died in the two years of unrest in the region which started in early 2004, and recently, Muslims who are seen as collaborators" are also being killed by militant Islamists.
UPDATE: The China People's Daily has given more details on the victim. The head of Anek Ngernmool, 31, was found on the side of an unfinished road in Lipasango village of Pattani province, the Thai TV Channel 7 quoted a local policeman as saying.
The Bangkok Post has said that Mr Ngernmool had been reported missing by his relatives on Tuesday night. Anek's body was found along the same road about three kilometers away, stated Col. Thawan Nakarawong, superintendent of Nongjik police station. "Anek didn't have any conflicts with other people," he said.
In a separate incident, on Wednesday morning (today), a policeman was shot and wounded in Yala province. He was driving his car at 7 am when two gunmen, dressed as students, approached and shot at him. He was wounded in the side.
