Spain: Arrests of Islamists - Links To Al Qaeda
Today in Spain, nine people were arrested, suspected of providing logistical support to terrorists. They are accused of providing funds for terrorist activities through forgery of credit cards and trafficking drugs, states the Irish Examiner.
The men were apprehended in Alicante city and province, and in southern Granada. The arrests were ordered by a judge from Spain's National Court, Fernando Andreu. The arrests were still underway in two Spanish cities, a court official stated.
Blogsite Euroresidentes states that ten had been arrested, quoting from the Spanish Interior Minister, Jose Antonio Alonso who said the raids had taken place in Alicante Murcia and Granada, as part of an operation to identify groups linked to al Qaeda.
The Minister appeared in a press conference and said that the ten belonged to a group called the Algerian Salafist Group for Call and Combat - or as we say here, the Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat or (GSPC), who the minister said were the Algerian arm of Al Qaeda. He stated that the arrests came after a 10 month investigation into the activities of the group, whom he said were not believed to be a military cell.
Spanish civil guards, heavily armed and in balaclavas (pictured) took drugs, documents and 35,000 euros cash during the raids. The group is thought tohave had links with other radical Algerian groups in Dennmark, Belgium, Germany, Holland and Britain.
Four were taken at Alicante, three from Torrevieja, two from Granada and one from Murcia.
