Qatar: Bush Wanted to Bomb al-Jazeera

I doubt this is true, but hey, stranger things have happenned: Al-Jazeera attack report 'outlandish': US

The White House on Wednesday termed as "outlandish" claims that President George W Bush had planned to bomb Arab television station Al-Jazeera but was talked out of it by British Prime Minister Tony Blair.

"We are not going to dignify something so outlandish with a response," BBC quoted a White House official as saying.

The Daily Mirror newspaper reported on Tuesday that according to a "top secret" memo of the British prime minister's office, Bush had planned to bomb the Arab TV network Al-Jazeera in Qatar, which has been a close ally of the US.

Oh, for the love of god, do I have to say this again? Qatar is only a "close ally" in diplomatic-speak. In real life, Qatar is what is known as "an enemy."

Al-Jazeera said it needed to be sure of the report's authenticity before reaching any conclusions and urged Downing Street to confirm its status as soon as possible, according to BBC.

A Downing Street spokesman said: "We have got nothing to say about this story. We don't comment on leaked documents."

However, former British minister Peter Kilfoyle, who had opposed the Iraq war, has called for a transcript of the alleged conversation to be published, BBC reported.

Ah, the obligatory treasonous leftist politician makes an appearance. (Treasonous because they put their love for power and moral grandstanding before the security of the nation.) Aren't this stories, being so predictable, kind of comforting?
