UK: Muslim "Honour Killing" - Brother Guilty

When 21-year old Ahmed Bashir began a clandestine relationship with Nighat Afsar, his romance would lead to his death. The relationship had lasted for two years, but Bashir would not give back Nighat's car, and this led Nighat's family to discover her secret meetings with Bashir.

Waseem Afsar, now aged 32, the brother of Nighat, and Nisar Khan, 31, chased Bashir into a garden, where Waseem Afsar proceeded to slash at him with a scimitar sword and a 10 inch knife. Ahmed Bashir died of his wounds. He had been stabbed 40 times, the blows aimed mainly at his groin.

Abdul Ebrahimkhail, a friend of Mr Bashir, tried to stop the murder, but he was also attacked and wounded. He survived. The assault took place in July 1996 in Hounslow, West London, states the Times.

Waseem Afsar and Nisar Khan, who denied the charges, were found guilty of murder and attempted murder. The two men, from Slough in Berkshire, were remanded in custody till Friday, when they are to be sentenced. They will be given life sentences, but the recommended duration of the time to be served is probably being assessed between now and Friday.

Waseem Afsar had been sought by police for a murder committed in 1995, a year prior to the killing of Ahmed Bashir. After he killed his sister's ex-lover, he was sentenced to life imprisonment for the previous killing.

Afsar and Nisar Khan were charged last year after police reassessed the case.
