New Zealand: Hater of Muslims is Jailed
The New Zealand Herald announces that a 38-year old man from Dunedin, South Island, has been jailed for 15 months.
Paul William McNutty had behaved in an "appalling way", Judge John Macdonald said while sentencing him.
The offences for which he was charged took place in AUgust, beginning with McNutty racially abusing a woman wearing a hijab (Muslim headscarf) at a bus stop. SHe fled to a bookshop, but McNutty followed her, continuing to abuse her. He left the shop, after spitting at the floor.
He took a bus to South Dunedin, and sat behind a Muslim man. He said he hated Muslims and showed a fist to the man, who stood up and asked to be left in peace. McNutty also stood, pushed the man and continued his verbal abuse. The Muslim man punched him.
The bus driver came to break up the situation, but also got hit by McNutty.
He was arrested and continued his abuse in the police car, with his targets now being the police, whom he threatened to kill, and spitting on an officer. In his pocket was found a brass knuckleduster and a cannabis pipe.
At Dunedin District Court, Judge John Macdonald said the offences constituted "extreme racial prejudice" and rejected McNutty's claims that he was not a racist. He was sentenced to 15 months for threatening to kill, possessing a weapon and possessing the cannabis pipe. He was not allowed to apply for home detention and was ordered to undergo anger management sessions.
In a week's time, the case of Jason Paul Molloy will be brought to a close with sentencing. Molloy, from Nelson, North Island, attacked seven mosques and Islamic cultural centres. He smashed windows and painted "RIP London", a month after the 7/7 London attacks. He has been bailed to appear before Manaku District Court on 29 November for sentencing, conditional that he stays at least 50 yards away from a mosque until then.
