Afghanistan: 28 Islamists Surrender Voluntarily
The Pakistan Times reports that twenty eight Islamists, eleven of whom are former Taliban members, have surrendered to the Afghanistan authorities. The men gave themselves up in the eastern city of Gardez, stated Ghulam Nabi Said, the city's head of intelligence.
As well as the 11 former Taliban, there were also 12 members of the Hezb-i-Islami group, who follow Gulbuddin Hekmatyar. Hekmatyar is on the US "most wanted" list. Five former fighters who worked for Jalaluddin Haqani also surrendered. Commander Haqani is wanted by the US for his links to al-Qaeda.
The men gave themselves up on Sunday, taking advantage of an offer made by the Afghan President, Hamid Karzai, of an amnesty to ex-Taliban and members of Islamist militias "whose hands are not stained with innocent people's blood."
