France: Muslim Riots Officially "Over" But Man Dies Extinguishing Arson Fire

From Associated Press, an account in abc7 News states that in the town of Trappes, southwest of Paris, a high school guard died of an apparent heart attack today, while trying to extinguish a burning vehicle, set alight by arsonists.

Though the raging unrest which was the worst in forty years of French history is over, sporadic arson attacks still continue with police claiming that about a dozen cars are set alight each night in Paris' suburbs.

On Sunday in Colmar, a city in the east of France, firefighters were trying to put out some burning scooters when they were pelted with stones by "youths".

The Muslim rioters have since October 27 attacked two synagogues, and at least two of the schools which they set on fire were Jewish. A church was set on fire in the Drome region of southern France. At least two mosques have also been attacked by arsonists, in an apparent retaliatory backlash against the riots by young Muslims.

In Saint-Etienne in the southeast, a mosque which is under construction was yesterday spray-painted with racist and "extreme" slogans, including one saying "defend yourself, France". Larbi Marchiche who is from a Moroccan cultural association that is overseeing the building the mosque called the attack "a provocation by brainless kids."

Marchiche does not seem to appreciate the irony of his statement, when more than 9,000 cars and various public buildings, including synagogues churches and nursery schools, and also one disabled woman have recently been set alight.
