Egypt: Muslim Brotherhood Keeps Winning on Parliamentary Elections

It turns out the "tiny minority of extremists" in Egypt is likely the largest political Party there, once you discount the institutional advantages Mubarak enjoys. I hope this at least shakens the blind faith some people have in the Democratic method: Egyptian Group Wins Eight Parliament Seats

CAIRO, Egypt - The Muslim Brotherhood won at least eight seats in the second round of Egypt's parliament elections as the Islamic group continued its strong showing despite widespread violence that marred the voting, according to partial results announced Monday. ADVERTISEMENT click here

The wins bring the Brotherhood's total so far to 42 seats, a large jump from the 15 it had in Egypt's outgoing parliament.

The surge in violence in Sunday's voting appeared to be a reaction to the Brotherhood's surprise victories in the first round of the three-part election.

Balloting in that round, earlier this month, was relatively peaceful, raising hopes of a clean vote amid President
Hosni Mubarak's promises for greater democracy in Egypt, a top U.S. ally.

(Note: Egypt is not a "top U.S. ally"! That's diplomatic-speak. In plain English, the proper name for Egypt is "enemy". At any rate, do read the story.)
