Israel: Four Hamas Islamists Arrested: Sharon To Quit
Arutz Sheva reported earlier today that four Hamas terrorists were arrested last night in the Hevron and Ramallah areas. IDF troops made the arrests, and there were no reports of injuries in the operations. The individuals were handed to the security authorities for interrogation.
This evening, Reuters reports that Ariel Sharon has dropped a political bombshell, by announcing his resignation from the Likud party, to stand alone as an independent in upcoming elections. Already 14 members of Likud, the party he helped to found, have agreed to join him.
Sharon, formerly viewed as a "hardliner" is now regarded as a peacemaker, neither wishing to "rule" over Palestinians nor prevent them gaining autonomy, but members of Likud opposed the pull-out from Gaza, and oppose the giving up of West Bank land.
The decision for Sharon to withdraw from Likud is seen as the start of a seismic change in the landscape of Israeli polittics. 77-year old former general Sharon is expected to go to President Moshe Katsav on Monday to request an early national election.
