Zimbabwe: Robert Mugabe Wants to Process Uranium
The way I see it, there are five explanations (or combinations thereof) for this story:
1. Mugabe really wants to build nuclear plants to provide Zimbabwe with electricity. In this case, he's delusional about his capabilities.
2. Mugabe wants to sell the enriched nuclear material to certain countries we won't mention. This would be more of less feasible.
3. Mugabe wants to build nukes for himself, to either "pull a North Korea" and blackmail the U.S., or just to have them to feel like a big important man. This too is delusional for the same reason as (1) above.
4. Mugabe want to rattle the chains of imperialist America.
5. Mugabe doesn't know what he's talking about, his descent into insanity has been completed.
Call me a bloodthirsty righ-wing warmonger--which I am--but I don't think number (1) above is very likely.
Ah, yes, here is the story: Zimbabwe to Process Newly Found Uranium
HARARE, Zimbabwe (AP) - President Robert Mugabe said Zimbabwe will turn to nuclear power by processing recently discovered uranium deposits to resolve its chronic electricity shortage, state radio said Sunday.Mugabe, who has close ties with two countries with controversial nuclear programs - Iran and North Korea, spoke of his intention Saturday, the radio station reported.
It was not clear how Mugabe intended to use any uranium deposits since the country does not have a nuclear power plant. The president announced plans in the 1990s to acquire a reactor from Argentina, but nothing else was ever heard about the proposal.
"Zimbabwe will develop power by processing uranium, which has recently been found in the country," Mugabe said, according to the radio. "The discovery of uranium will go a long way in further enhancing the government rural electrification program."
Zimbabwe was not previously known to have any workable deposits of uranium.
