Indonesia: Muslim Militants Aim To Target Foreigners

Today, Xinhua Net announced that Western governments have issued warnings to nationals seeking to travel to Indonesia.

The US, Britain and Australia have advised citizens against unnecessary travel to Indonesia, following the discovery of a website called Anshar El Muslimin. The website was discovered during investigations into the recent Bali bombings of November 1, and was created by an individual suspected of involvement with the recent attacks, who is now in custody.

On Friday, the South China Morning Post said that a television report had said the website contains hardline Islamic propaganda and also writings by an Islamist involved in the 2002 attacks on Bali, who is now in prison on death row.

Police claimed to be investigating the Indonesian-language site, but so far had not closed it down. The site mentions the best way to assassinate foreigners in the capital, Jakarta, and advises using a popular shopping mall as a location for killings.

It includes a very basic map of a mall and nearby offices, and gives simplistic instructions like "ensure the target is killed by shooting him several times in the heart and head".....

Under a "tactics" section of the site, several pages give tips on how to carry out assassinations of foreigners in cars or on foot, either by shooting or with hand grenades.

The Australian Herald Sun states that the site advises the use of the mall because it is popular with exxpatriates who go there for lunch. It also states: "Shooting at the driver should not be the objective because normally the driver is a Muslim."

Xinhua reports that the US Embassy in Jakarta had observed that the website showed the Islamists were renewing their tactics. Yesterday, Australia warned that attacks could be mounted against Western interests before the end of the year.
