Bangladesh: Six Islamists Arrested, But The Big Fish Gets Away
Bangladesh's Independent announces that six Islamists were captured on Friday. Abdul Awal, the son-in-law of Sheikh Abdur Rahman, the head of Jamaatul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), was captured in Thakaugaon in the old bus stand area. He is one of the country's top five wanted extremists, according to police.
Acting on a tip-off, a bus going from Panchagarah to Dinjapur was raided when it reached Thakurgaon in the afternoon. Awul, also known as Samad, and four accomplices were detained. Later, police arrested Abdul Latif, a known member of the outlawed JMB from his house at Bhangbari in the upazila (ward) of Ranishainkal, in Thakurgaon district.
Also detained in a separate move was Golam Mohammad Bhuiyan Manik. Manik is president of a chapter of another Islamist group, Islami Chhatra Sena, the student wing of Islami Oikyo Front. Manik was arrested by plainclothes detectives at Al Baraka Hospital in Dhaka, the capital, late on Thursday night. Telephone surveillance revealed his involvement in the nationwide bombings of August 17. According to the China Post, 400 people have so far been arrested in connection with the August 17 bombings.
The Daily Star announces that on Friday, the big fish himself, Abdul Rahman (pictured), managed to narrowly avoid capture in a raid upon a house in Khilgaon, near Meradia Bazar, in the capital, Dhaka.
The raid tool place late at night on Friday, with operatives from the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) taking part, acting on information given. They stormed the house, and found it empty, though it had only recently been vacated. The owner of the house, when shown photographs, confirmed that the man living there had been Abdur Rahman.
The Daily Star relates that, acting on information gleaned from Abdul Awal, RAB forces in conjunction with police from Thakurgaon and Panchagarth went to the New Slum area and arrested three men at a residence. They also found bomb making materials at the house.
