US: Former Leader of Seattle Mosque Arrested
A report from yesterday's Seattle Times states that Abrahim Sheikh Mohamed was arrested at Seattle-Tacoma airport as he returned from a visit to Dallas. The Somali-born former imam of a storefront mosque in Rainier Valley, Mohamed was arrested for suspected immigration irregularities.
The Rainier Valley mosque, the Abu Bakr, closed down two months ago, lacking a permanent site. The congregation now meet at the New Holly Neighbourhood Campus. The Somali community is shocked by the arrest.
No date has been set for the hearing on Mohamed's immigration status, which will take place at the Immigration Court in Seattle. Nancy Bartley, author of the article, states that since a ruling was passed by the US Supreme Court in January 2004, which allows illegal immigrants to be returned to a country, even if it does not have a central government, Mohamed's future may be bleak. As we have reported, Somalia is currently in a state of near-anarchy.
